The most important reason why you should be taking up an overseas study insurance plan for your child, rather than a conventional travel insurance plan, is the duration of cover:
A single-trip travel insurance plan provides cover for a maximum of 182 days;
An annual multi-trip travel insurance plan provides cover for a maximum of 90 days;
Unless your child is going for a short study trip lasting less than 90 days, travel insurance is simply not sufficient to provide him / her with the necessary cover.
There are many benefits under an overseas study insurance plan. The more relevant benefits to your child include:
01. Overseas medical expenses
Depending on the tier that you have chosen,
Both (i) inpatient and (ii) outpatient medical expenses can be covered;
In addition, expenses incurred due to (i) accidents or (ii) illnesses can also be covered;
02. Emergency medical evacuation
During medical emergencies, the costs to evacuate your child (back to Singapore for quality treatments near to home and family) will be covered.
03. Travel inconveniences
While overseas, your child will likely to be travelling to explore the local areas or even to nearby countries. Trips made will be covered, which include but are not limited to, trip delays, loss of baggage and theft / loss of personal belongings
All health / medical insurance policies clearly define the geographical scope of cover in which claims can be admitted. For example, a health insurance policy may only cover expenses incurred in Singapore. Expenses incurred outside of Singapore will not be covered.
01. If you have purchased an integrated-shield plan for your child, do take note that it is designed to only cover expenses incurred in Singapore hospitals.
02. Some integrated-shield plans cover "emergency overseas treatment", subject to T&Cs. For example,
Some insurers need your child to be a resident of Singapore on the admission date. This is unlikely to be the case when he/she is studying outside of Singapore for more than 183 days;
The insurer of your integrated-shield plan reserves the right to assess if a medical condition is to be classified as an emergency. If the medical condition that your child suffers from is not classified as an emergency, the expenses incurred will not be covered;
